What is a Virtual Open House?
Virtual Open Houses are interactive sessions scheduled and conducted using Web conferencing software. This software enables participants to view documents, slide shows, Web sites and other resources via presentation by the moderator, as well as type in questions using a chatroom feature. In addition, participants call into a toll-free phone number, and are able to speak to the moderator, internship director, current interns, and other participants.
If you are interested in joining an event, you must send an email to Phyllis McShane (pmcshane@umd.edu) to register. At this time, we are only able to accomodate the first ten registrants for each event date.

What equipment or software do I need to participate?
You will need:
- A laptop or desktop computer
- A phone line or cell phone
- An Internet connection
- An Internet browser. You must also run a browser test prior to the event, available here. The Web conferencing software that will be used during the event will run directly through your Internet connection.
What happens when I register?
Once you send an email requesting registration for one of the Virtual Open House dates, you will receive an email either confirming your registration, or letting you know that the event is full. This email will also include a toll-free conference telephone number and passcode, a link to run the browser test, and a link to join the meeting. You will need to save this information to use on the day of the event.
What should I do if I cannot access the open house?
Be sure to run the browser test prior to the event, as this will eliminate many of the issues users typically encounter.
- If you are having trouble with the computer portion of the event, contact the moderator using the conference telephone number and passcode provided to you via email upon registration.
- If you are having trouble with the phone portion of the event, please join the meeting using the link provided to you via email upon registration. Once you have joined the meeting, send a message to the moderator using the software's chat feature.
- If you are having trouble with both the phone and computer connections, please call the Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC) at 301-504-5414.
Will I be able to see the moderator or others during the event?
No. In contrast to using a Webcam or other video device, you will not be able to see anyone in participating in the event, and they will not be able to see you.
What are the benefits of the virtual open house?
The Virtual Open House events are designed to enable students interested in the University of Maryland College Park Dietetic Internship to learn more about the program without the time and cost of travel. Whether from the comfort of your home, or on campus in between classes, you will have the opportunity to interact directly with the internship director, Phyllis McShane, as well as current interns, and graduates of the program. Using state of the art technology, you can get answers to any questions you may have, or just sit back and view the information presented while listening to the questions of others. It's all about choosing an internship program that's a fit for you!
